General Birdwatching InXformXation

Over 300 bird species within 30 km2!
Supporting a wide diversity of habitats
that are uniquely located along the
main migratory path that joins Europe,
Asia and Africa makes this one of the
best birding hotspots in the Western
Palearctic. This is the place to watch
flocks of tens of thousands of soaring
birds such as storks, pelicans and
many species of raptors. The wetland
habitat around the Jordan River and
fishponds attract a wide variety of
waterbirds from great black-headed
gulls to common shelduck. The
limestone cliffs bordering the Jordan
River are particularly attractive to cavity
nesters such as bee-eaters and rollers.
The open grassland and scrub areas
provide natural habitat for the black
francolin. The surrounding fields attract
a wide variety of migrating and
wintering birds such as sociable and
white-tailed plovers, pallid and Montagu's

harriers, wagtails, pipits and buntings.
Within easy reach of the center, other
attractive birding sites are located such
as the Hula Valley, one of the most
important wetland areas in the Middle
East. Wintering within an area of 20
km2 are over 25,000 Eurasian cranes,
as well as 17 species of raptors
including good numbers of rare species
such as imperial and spotted eagles.
This is also the best area to observe
resident marbled teal, a globally
threatened species.

Each season has its own unique set of
species that can be found near the
center. During spring and autumn,
migration is one of the most notable
seasonal phenomena in Israel
(see below). However, the winter
months between November and
March can also provide excellent
opportunities for birding. Large
concentrations of waterbirds such
as herons, cormorants, and waterfowl
are present at the fishponds; where
as, a great variety and abundance of
bird of prey can be found throughout
the area. During spring and summer,
resident and some migrant species
commence nesting. Specialties here
include large rookeries of herons
including some pygmy cormorants
(another globally threatened species),
and colonies of cavity nesting bee-
eaters and rollers.

The Jordan Valley is host to an almost continual flux of migrating birds, although the main seasons
are during March to May, and again from September to November. Several hundred, million birds
of over 300 species pass through the Jordan Valley in autumn and spring. Many of these species
breed in mid and Eastern Europe and a significant portion of their entire population pass through
the region. Indeed, the entire population of some species such as the Lesser Spotted Eagle and
the White Stork passes through the area twice a year. The annual autumn survey of soaring
migrants is conducted from the center and includes observation points west to Haifa. During the
spring, soaring birds pass in lower concentrations but with the same variety of species. However,
species composition does vary between seasons making birdwatching in this area always
